Hulu Picks Up Wattpad Fan-Favorite “Light as a Feather” in Straight-to-Series Order
Wattpad Studios is excited to announce that Hulu has picked up Light as a Feather from AwesomenessTV and Wattpad in a straight-to-series deal.
Based on Zoe Aarsen’s (@zaarsenist) supernatural thriller of the same name, Light as a Feather is a Wattpad fan-favorite with more than 2.9 million reads. The story follows five teen girls as they deal with the supernatural fallout stemming from an innocent game of “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.” When the girls start dying off in the exact way that was predicted, the survivors must figure out why they’re being targeted -- and whether the evil force hunting them down is one of their own.
A joint venture between Wattpad, AwesomenessTV and Grammnet, Light as a Feather is the first Wattpad story to be picked up by Hulu. The 10-episode horror series starts production in June.
“Light as a Feather is a captivating and unique story, with supernatural twists and thrills that readers all over the world have fallen in love with,” said Aron Levitz, Head of Wattpad Studios. “The story is another example of a Wattpad fan favorite that is perfect for adaptation and new life on another platform. We’re excited to be working with AwesomenessTV and Hulu to bring Light as a Feather to a new audience in a new format, while also giving the story’s millions of current fans another way to enjoy the story they couldn’t put down.”
“When I first joined Wattpad, I set out to create something unique, exploring characters and a world where female empowerment, friendship, and supernatural forces come together,” said Zoe Aarsen, author of Light as a Feather. “Wattpad is a place where people come together and connect over stories, discussing every twist and cliffhanger, so it was the perfect platform for my story. Teen horror is my passion, so I can’t wait to be able to share Light as a Feather with other horror aficionados on Hulu.”
Creator and executive producer of Light as a Feather is Lee Fleming Jr. (She’s All That, One Tree Hill) while EPs on the project include:
-
AwesomenessTV: Jordan Levin, Shelley Zimmerman, Joe Davola and Brett Bouttier
-
Wattpad: Aron Levitz and Eric Lehrman
-
Grammnet: Tom Russo, Brian Sher, and Stella Bulochnikov.
Bloodlist’s Kailey Marsh is also a co-producer.
AwesomenessTV and Hulu are the latest companies to work with Wattpad Studios to find exciting new voices and IP for screens all over the world. In February, Wattpad, Tongal, and CW Seed launched the pilot episode of Cupid’s Match, based on Lauren Palphreyman (@LEPalphreyman)’s global Wattpad hit of the same name. Other Wattpad Studios entertainment partners include Universal Cable Productions and eOne, among others. Wattpad Studios also works with publishers like Hachette Romans and HarperCollins Children’s Books to turn Wattpad stories into best-selling books all over the world.
